Words That Wounded

Bringing Our Beliefs Before the Word

Examining Accusation, Rejecting False Verdicts, and Renewing the Mind in Christ

By Joel RabeFinal page count forthcoming

What happens when a remembered message sounds like a verdict? This volume brings memory, conscience, shame, and accusation beneath the authority of Scripture. It distinguishes conviction from condemnation, examines protection that masquerades as virtue, and explores what we keep offering to sustain an old belief. The reader then learns to test conclusions carefully through biblical context, language, and truth while preserving facts and responsibility.

Scripture is the center of examination. Its context guides the reader in testing a conclusion rather than merely finding a phrase to support it.

An artistic reflection on the book’s themes.

READING THE DESIGN

About the Cover

Sometimes a remembered message arrives with the force of a verdict. The stone table, scales, and torn parchments picture the inner courtroom, where memory, conscience, shame, and accusation can speak at once. The open Bible stands at the center because the strongest feeling in the room needs to be examined beneath the truth of Christ.

In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul brings arguments and thoughts beneath obedience to Christ. This volume invites you to examine the conclusions you carry: What is true? What requires repentance or repair? What has become an accusation beyond the facts? The torn papers suggest false verdicts being released while responsibility remains in view.

The golden thread passes through the open pages and continues onward. Romans 12:2 speaks of renewal, and Psalm 119:160 affirms the truth of God’s Word. The warm light on the Bible points toward the grace of Christ, who meets us in truthful examination. We can learn to receive correction, reject condemnation, and take the next faithful step.

SCRIPTURE & KEY CONCEPTS

Biblical connections

2 Corinthians 10:5 · KJV excerpt

“bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”

Psalm 119:160 · KJV

“Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”

Romans 12:2 · KJV excerpt

“be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind”

Greek: logismos / logismoi - reasoning / reasonings

Logismoi, the plural of logismos, means reasonings or arguments. In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul addresses arguments opposing the knowledge of God. The cover uses that concern as a pastoral illustration for testing the conclusions we carry.

Greek: anakainosis - renewal

Romans 12:2 connects the renewal of the mind with transformation and discerning God's will. The golden thread represents that reorientation through truth.

Lexical reference ↗

Hebrew: emet - truth, reliability, faithfulness

In Psalm 119:160 the term concerns the truth of God's Word. Biblical truth here is something trustworthy by which a life can be examined and directed.

FROM THE MANUSCRIPT · CHAPTER 31

Memory, Conscience, Shame, and Accusation

The Inner Courtroom Opens

James's memory arrived as a complete verdict. He remembered the serious wrong he had confessed, the people he harmed, the consequences that remained, and the accusation that a person with his past should never serve again. Rebecca's courtroom opened differently. Another person's disappointment could make her feel guilty before any command, promise, or actual offense had been identified. Memory, conscience, shame, prediction, and accusation could fuse in both lives while carrying very different moral content.

The courtroom image helps only when those elements are separated. MEMORY offers testimony about what happened. CONSCIENCE evaluates specific conduct. HUMILIATION concerns being lowered or exposed by others. SHAME converts exposure into a total identity sentence. ACCUSATION prosecutes, often without a reachable end. CONVICTION brings specific truth into light and directs the person toward confession, repair, and Christ.

The categories can overlap in experience without receiving equal authority. A memory may concern a real event and carry an interpretation formed later. Conscience may speak truly or may be weak, defiled, seared, or misinformed. Shame may contain awareness of real guilt and then exceed it. Accusation may use true facts to demand a sentence Christ has not issued.
